“Beautiful Zhèjiāng and the Extraordinary Philippines”

“浙”里最美、“菲”比寻常

China and the Philippines have extensive cooperation in economic, cultural, and other fields. With the promotion of “the Belt and Road Initiative”, Chinese enterprises are actively involved in various sectors in the Philippines, leading to an increasing demand for local talents proficient in Chinese language. Additionally, Filipino culture has been deeply influenced by Chinese culture, and Filipinos and Chinese blend together well. For that reason, many Filipinos have a keen interest in understanding Chinese language and culture. It is evident that promoting language and cultural exchanges between China and the Philippines is crucial for strengthening cooperation and enhancing friendly relations between the two countries. With experiences of studying in the Philippines, nearly half of the project members are familiar with the teaching at Filipino universities. Among the members are two Chinese teachers dispatched by Confucius Institutes, one of whom has served as the Chinese director of a Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University in the United States. Additionally, there is a Mandarin proficiency test coordinator to ensure the standardization of language teaching. During their study in the Philippines, the project leader and key members visited local Confucius Institutes, and universities offering Chinese international courses, and training centers for Chinese language teachers. From these visits and due to the influence of local languages, the focus of Chinese language learning of this project in the Philippines should mainly concentrates on tones and homophones. In addition, the distinctive features of economically developed areas in China have especially attracted the interest of local students. As a result of this observation and in consideration of the geographical location of Zhejiang Yuexiu University and with the advantage of Zhejiang Province’s international reputation as the host of the Asian Games, the project team designed eight thematic units titled “Beautiful Zhèjiāng and the Extraordinary Philippines”. Each unit revolves around a cultural theme related to Zhejiang Province, intertwining language teaching and cultural experiences in order to promote Chinese culture and foster cultural exchanges between China and the Philippines. The project team produced eight instructional videos, all presented in Chinese with English subtitles, introducing the culture of Zhejiang as related to the theme of that particular unit. By way of introducing the meanings of phrases, word formation, synonyms, homophones, and puns that are related to the particular theme for that unit, language learning and culture are combined, making language learning both enjoyable and informative. These video lessons serve as mediums for Chinese stories, teaching materials for Mandarin learning, and self-learning resources for learners.

中菲在经济、文化等领域有着广泛合作。在“一带一路”倡议推动下,中资企业活跃在菲各领域,对懂汉语本土人才需求不断增大。此外,菲律宾文化受中国文化影响颇深,菲人与华人融合度高,乐于了解中国语言文化。可见,促进中菲间的语言文化交流对于深化两国合作、增进友好关系至关重要。

项目近半成员有旅菲学习经历,对菲高校教学模式较熟悉,成员中包括两位孔子学院公派汉语教师,其中一位曾在美国德州农工大学担任孔子学院中方院长;另还有一位普通话测试员确保教学语言规范性。负责人和主要成员在菲学习期间走访调研了当地孔子学院、开设汉语国际课程的高校、话语教学培训中心后发现:受当地语言影响,汉语的声调、同音异义词等是学习聚焦点;中国经济较发达地区的地方特色让当地学生兴趣浓厚。

据此,结合我校所在区域以及亚运会浙江省国际知名度提升优势,利用汉语同音异义现象、双关修辞,设计了“浙”里最美、“菲”比寻常8个单元主题:自然景观(浙)、历史文化(历“里”)、商业文化(最)、名人文化(美)、戏曲艺术(非“菲”)、文化遗迹(笔“比”)、建筑艺术(寻)、美食文化(尝“常”)。每单元围绕一个浙江地方文化主题词开展语言教学,学员学习语言同时体验中国文化,分享菲律宾文化,增进中菲情感。

项目组录制的8个教学视频均采用中文教学、中英字幕形式,围绕每单元主题词展开介绍浙江地方文化;在教授该主题词的词义、组词、同义词、音近词、以及双关等修辞表意中,将语言学习和文化传递融为一体,寓教于乐。视频课既是中国故事载体,也是汉语教学素材,还是学习者自主学习资源。
