Food and Life in Harbin, the Ice City

As a Chinese proverb goes, “Food is the first necessity of the people ”. Chinese people love food and study it. By understanding the food Chinese people eat, one gets to understand not only the life of Chinese people but also the Chinese culture. China is a vast country endowed with rich resources. Each region has its own dietary habits and featured food. Harbin is located in the Northeast of China. It has four distinctive seasons. Summers here are cool while winters are cold and long, hence the name “Ice City”. How do such geographical and climatic conditions shape the people’s life here? What unique dietary habits do people here have? This course, themed Harbin people’s food, will take students to know Harbin, the “Ice City”, and to experience everyday meals and the daily life of the lovely people here. Through this course, students will not only discover many dietary and living habits different from their own, but also find similarities between the people of the Ice City and themselves.
