Clay sculpture is commonly known as “color sculpture”. As an ancient and common folk art in Chinese folk tradition, Clay sculpture art is a folk handicraft that uses clay to make various images. Hezhou clay sculptures can be traced back to the Majiayao culture in more than 5,000 years ago and the Qijia culture in more than 4,000 years ago. There are a wide range of subjects. The works include clay sculptures of individual figures, animals and plants, group figures, painted clay sculptures, and architectural clay sculptures. These sculptures present the humanistic outlook, folklore characteristics and lifestyle of Linxia area.
