Founded in 1950, the university was formerly known as Changchun College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was founded in 1958. In 2006, it was renamed Changchun University of Chinese Medicine (CCUCM). CCUCM is one of the Provincial Key Universities of Jilin Province, a university of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China, a university jointly built by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and one of Jilin Provincial Characteristic High-level Construction Universities. CCUCM is one of the first batches of host universities approved by the Ministry of Education to receive and train students from foreign countries, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao regions. In 2013, the University was granted the qualification of cultivating students awarded by the Chinese Government Scholarship. The University has established extensive academic exchange and cooperation with universities and research institutions from 21countries and regions. In recent years, the University has undertaken nearly 10 national, provincial and ministerial projects, including the Special International Cooperation Projects of the International Cooperation Department of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine—the Northeast Asia TCM Communication and Development Base Project and the China-Russia TCM Center (Moscow).

学校肇始于1950年成立的长春市立中医进修学校,前身是1958年成立的长春中医学院,2006年更名为长春中医药大学。学校是吉林省省属重点大学、国家中西部高校基础能力建设工程高校、吉林省人民政府和国家中医药管理局共建高校、吉林省特色高水平大学建设高校。学校是教育部首批批准接收和培养外国留学生及台港澳地区学生院校,并于2013年获得中国政府奖学金培养院校资格;先后与21个国家和地区的高校、研究单位开展广泛的学术交流与合作。近年来承担国家级、省部级项目近10项,建有国家中医药管理局国际合作司国际合作专项“东北亚中医药传播发展基地”和“中国—俄罗斯中医药中心(莫斯科)”。
