Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT), established in 1903，was originally called Beiyang Technology School in its early days. This was one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China to focus on engineering education. The University ranked among the first batch of key universities under the national "Project 211" in 1996 and has been a national "Double First-Class" University since 2017. It was jointly built by Hebei Province, Tianjin City and the Ministry of Education. The university has 20 teaching institutions and 64 undergraduate majors, including 37 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, covering seven disciplines – engineering, science, economics, management, arts, law and fine arts. It has 1 national "world-class discipline", 2 national key disciplines, 3 world-class discipline construction projects in Hebei Province, 4 national-class discipline construction projects in Hebei Province, and 7 key disciplines in Tianjin City. The University has more than 23,000 full-time undergraduate students and over 9,000 postgraduate students. The university has more than 2,800 teaching staff, over 1,800 of whom are full-time teachers. In recent years, relying on the platforms jointly built by Hebei Province, Tianjin City and the Ministry of Education, Hebei University of Technology has built 62 scientific research platforms, including national key laboratories jointly built by Hebei Province and the Ministry of Education, national engineering technology research centers, national-and-local engineering laboratories and provincial, as well as ministerial scientific research platforms. The university has hosted 21 major national key projects, 700 national natural science-funded projects and has been granted more than 2,700 patents. The university focuses on international exchange and cooperation, and at present, the university has signed cooperation-in-running-school agreements with more than 60 foreign universities, covering all levels from undergraduate to doctoral in cooperation training. The university has also established campuses overseas, such as the “Finland Campus” with LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland, and the “Arizona College of Technology” with the world-renowned University of Arizona, USA. Currently, there are nearly 1,000 students in Sino-foreign cooperative programs and more than 300 international students at HEBUT. The university is currently upholding the spirit of its motto "diligence, prudence, integrity and loyalty”, carrying forward the tradition of developing industry to serve the country, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of its educational approach, which combines engineering and other disciplines. The university is striving to become a high-level university of significance and renown both at home and abroad.
河北工业大学的前身是创办于1903年的北洋工艺学堂，是我国最早的培养工业人才的高等学校之一，创办了全国最早的高校校办工厂。学校由河北省、天津市和教育部共建，是国家“211工程”及“双一流”工程重点建设高校。
学校设有20个教学机构，现有64个本科招生专业，其中37个国家级一流本科专业建设点，涵盖工、理、经、管、文、法、艺七大学科门类。拥有1个国家“世界一流学科”、2个国家重点学科，3个河北省世界一流学科建设项目，4个河北省国家一流学科建设项目，7个天津市重点学科。学校现有全日制本科在校生23000余人、研究生9000余人；教职员工2800余人，其中专任教师1800余人。
近年来，学校依托省市部共建平台，建有包括省部共建国家重点实验室、国家级工程技术研究中心、国家地方联合工程实验室在内的国家和省部级科研平台62个。荣获国家自然科学二等奖、国家科技进步二等奖等多项奖励；主持国家重大重点项目、国家自然科学基金700项，授权专利2700余项。
学校注重国际交流合作，已与60余所国外高校签订了合作办学协议，合作培养覆盖本科到博士各层次。学校在芬兰拉彭兰塔市与拉彭兰塔理工大学合作共建“河北工业大学芬兰校区”，与世界知名大学美国亚利桑那大学共建“河北工业大学亚利桑那工业学院”。学校现有在校中外合作办学项目学生近千人，来华留学生300余人。
