Introduction to Harbin University

Harbin University is located in the western core area of Harbin, the ice city in the north. It is the only full-time public ordinary undergraduate university in Harbin, with a provincial and municipal joint construction education system focusing on municipal level.

The predecessor of the university is the North Manchurian Special Zone Normal School, which was established in 1934. In March 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, four schools which are Harbin Normal College, Harbin University, Harbin Institute of Education and Harbin Institute of Adult Education were merged to establish Harbin University. After the joint upgrading, Harbin Normal School and Harbin Finance and Economics School were successively incorporated. After 88 years of construction and development, the university has become an application-oriented university with distinctive urban characteristics, highlighting the advantages of science and engineering, art design and teacher education, with coordinated development of economics, law, teaching, culture, science, engineering, management, art and other disciplines.

In 2007, the university passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation carried out by the Ministry of Education with good results. In 2018, the university successfully passed the review for undergraduate teaching evaluation carried out by the Ministry of Education. It is the reform project unit of excellent primary school teacher training plan of the Ministry of Education, construction unit of establishment and awarding of master's degree project in Heilongjiang Province, characteristic application-oriented undergraduate demonstration university in Heilongjiang Province, and support unit of innovation and entrepreneurship development direction in Heilongjiang Province. It has been rewarded as the demonstration university (for cultivation) for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Heilongjiang Province and the first batch shared university innovation and entrepreneurship incubation platform, and has won honorary titles such as the "National Public Institution Efficiency Leader", "Heilongjiang May-Day Labor Award Unit", "Provincial Civilized Campus Model", and "Harbin Model Labor Unit".

The university practices the motto of "Worship morality, strive for success, be well-educated and commit to practice", adheres to the teaching style of "Learn well, be integrity, be rigorous and pursue perfection", and strives to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents that meet the needs of regional economic and social development. The university has 12 secondary colleges and 46 undergraduate majors, 8 professional clusters are built to meet the industrial needs of Longjiang and Harbin, and application-oriented majors account for more than 90%. There are 11970 full-time students. The annual average employment rate of graduates in the province is more than 55%, of which about 60% choose to work in Harbin.

The university now has 1075 teachers and employees. There are 348 professors and associate professors, accounting for 51.1% of all full-time teachers and 568 teachers with master's degree or above, accounting for 83.4% (including 25.3% of doctors). The proportion of "teachers with double teaching functions" reaches 55.1%. There are 8 experts enjoying the special allowance from the State Council and provincial government, 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 8 provincial famous teachers, provincial outstanding young and middle-aged experts and municipal young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, and 13 national teaching teams, provincial teaching teams, provincial educational science research teams and municipal professional leading talent echelons. The university has been rewarded as a provincial pilot university for deepening education evaluation reform (individual talent project) in the new era.

The university now has 1 national first-class major, 1 national first-class course, 12 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 30 provincial first-class courses, 9 provincial classic courses, 27 production-learning cooperation education projects of the Ministry of Education, and 4 provincial virtual simulation experiment teaching projects. It has won 1 second prize of national excellent teaching achievement and 31 first and second prizes of provincial excellent teaching achievement. The primary school education major took the lead in passing the Ministry of Education's certification for teacher training majors. The majors of mathematics, applied mathematics and musicology have completed the professional certification and professional certification expert team has entered the campus for inspection. The software engineering major has passed the application for engineering education professional certification. Cooperate with Heilongjiang Radio and Television Station and Kwai Technology Co., Ltd. to jointly build Long Radio and Television Kwai Media Research Institute, and cooperate with Beijing Yingke Law Firm to create Harbin Local Economic Development Law Construction Research Center. Its new generation information technology industry college was rated as the first batch modern industry college construction site in Heilongjiang Province. In 2020, Harbin Fudan Road Primary School is renamed as "Harbin University Experimental Primary School". In 2021, the University was approved to be the provincial tourism, culture and fashion industry shortage talents training base and provincial intangible cultural heritage education base. The "entrepreneurship and innovation" project has won the national bronze prize in the "Internet+" Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for three consecutive times. 

The university focuses on serving the local economic and social development capacity and performing supporting role, and constantly strengthens the construction of master's degree awarding unit and authorization points. Now it has 2 provincial key laboratories and 2 provincial academic exchange bases. In the past five years, the university has undertaken more than 10 national scientific research projects and more than 120 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, successively won more than 50 provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards, obtained nearly 200 invention patents, undertaken more than 300 horizontal topics, participated in the provincial scientific and technological breakthrough project of "taking the task and being responsible", and realized the transformation of more than 60 scientific and technological achievements such as "Study on Electric Control System in Intelligent Mining Demonstration of Comprehensive Mining Face in Extremely Thin Coal Seam", "Double First-class" Phase II Project "Construction Project of Special Zones for Collaborative Innovation of Art Disciplines" and "Research, Development and Application of environment-friendly Waste Paper Deinking Technology". In 2021, it won 1 third prize of the provincial science and technology progress award, 1 second prize of the provincial university science and technology award, 44 provincial excellent art research achievements awards, 16 excellent research achievements awards in humanities and social sciences of the provincial university, 2 provincial excellent research achievements awards in literature, 2 provincial excellent research achievements awards in sociology and psychology, 16 provincial outstanding research achievements awards in higher education science, and 27 municipal 27th outstanding achievements awards in social sciences. 7 provincial natural science fund projects, 8 provincial philosophy and social science research planning projects, 5 provincial key research projects (base special projects) for economic and social development, 18 provincial education science planning projects, 22 provincial art science planning projects, 6 provincial social science academic works publishing funding projects and 2 science popularization activities entrusted projects of provincial social sciences association were approved, and the scientific research funds reached 30 million yuan.

The university has established the Heilongjiang Wetland Training Center and Harbin Wetland Research Institute to jointly carry out key scientific and technological projects with Harbin Metro Group. The "solid waste for sand making" series local standard projects were researched and prepared to provide technical support for high-quality development of construction industry in our province, which was approved by the Province Governor of that time Wang Wentao. The university serves the development of creative design industry in Longjiang, explores the connotation of Longjiang culture and ice-snow culture, and researches and creates artistic products such as ice flower porcelain and ice-snow pottery. It creates theme murals that highlight the spirit of the Great Northern Wilderness, the spirit of the city, and the history of the old industrial base and being exhibited on the city subway station platform. It inherits the gene of red culture, and the four spirits cultural and creative exhibition hall in Heilongjiang was approved as "Heilongjiang Social Science Popularization Base". Harbin Ballet was established to create an international first-class cultural card. The "Citizen Lecture Hall" won the provincial "Excellent Project of National Reading Activities" and "Brand Project of Lifelong Learning", and the Citizen Learning Center won the title of Heilongjiang Model Elderly University.

The university cooperates with Blagoveshchensk National Normal University and Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in carrying out language practice projects to cultivate high-quality application-oriented Russian talents with international vision. Relying on Harbin-Shenzhen-Russia Cultural and Art Exposition, expand the breadth and depth of cultural and artistic exchanges between Chinese and Russian universities. Actively carry out China-Russia, China-South Korea, China-Germany and China-Italy joint school running projects, and make new contributions to the "Belt and Road Initiative" and opening up to the north.
