ZJWEU is an application-oriented engineering university with distinctive characteristics. In 2014, the University was entitled to be jointly built by the People's government of Zhejiang Province and the Ministry of Water Resources, PRC. In 2019, it was listed as an application-oriented construction pilot demonstration University in Zhejiang Province. It has been constantly deepening international cooperation and exchanges, actively participating in The Belt and Road construction, cooperating with International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP). It has established cooperative relations with universities in United States of America, Britain, France, Germany, Belarus, Malaysia and other countries to explore academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation.
浙江水利水电学院是一所特色鲜明的工科类应用型本科高校，是浙江省人民政府与水利部共建。2019年列入浙江省应用型建设试点示范院校，2020年列为水利部强监管人才培养基地，被誉为浙江水利水电人才培养的摇篮。学校毕业生长期受到社会普遍认可和广泛赞誉。
学校深化国际合作与交流，积极参与“一带一路”建设。与联合国国际小水电中心等机构开展合作；与美国、英国、加拿大、澳大利亚、法国、德国、西班牙、白俄罗斯、马来西亚等10多个国家知名高校建立合作关系，不断深化国际合作。学校已招收马来西亚、孟加拉等多国留学生。
