Guilin Tourism University, formerly known as Guilin Institute of Tourism, was founded in 1985. In 2015, it was upgraded to Guilin Tourism University (GTU), which is one of the earliest independent full-time public tourism undergraduate universities in China. The university now has two campuses, Yanshan campus and Canluan Campus, covering a total area of 1.25 million square meters (1,885 mu), with more than 12,000 full-time students. The university is the key supporting unit of the United Nations World Tourism Organization and its affiliated member unit of the Education Committee, the educational member unit of the Asia-Pacific Tourism Association, the China-Asean Tourism Talents Education and Training Base, and the initiator of the "Five Star Alliance" of China's tourism colleges and universities. It ranked first in the "Top 10 Most Popular Domestic Tourism Colleges and Universities in the Hospitality Industry" conducted by the prestigious magazine "Hotelier".
桂林旅游学院创办于1985年，原名桂林旅游专科学校，1994年定名为“桂林旅游高等专科学校”，2015年经教育部批准升格为普通本科高等学校，2021年成为广西壮族自治区人民政府、文化和旅游部共建高校，是我国两所独立建制全日制公办旅游本科院校之一。学校现有雁山、骖鸾两个校区，校园总面积125.72万平方米（1885亩），全日制在校生12000多人。
学校是联合国世界旅游组织在中国大陆设定的唯一重点支持单位及其教育委员会附属成员单位、世界旅游联盟会员单位、亚洲开发银行“高端旅游人才培训优秀合作伙伴”、中国旅游院校“五星联盟”单位，是中国-东盟旅游人才教育培训基地、中国旅游研究院东盟旅游研究基地的载体单位，是中国-东盟旅游教育联盟（CATEA）发起院校及其秘书长单位，是国家级专业技术人员继续教育基地，是唯一获“全国旅游扶贫培训基地”的高校，是全国研学旅行指导师培训基地、首批港澳青少年游学基地，是广西旅游产业人才小高地、广西旅游数据中心、广西红色文化与旅游研究基地载体单位和广西博士后创新实践基地。
