Poetry is the earliest and most mature form of literature in the history of Chinese literature. The first general collection of poetry in Chinese history was The Book of Songs. In the unified Qin and Han dynasties, the most literary representative Han Yuefu music poetry became another great collection of ancient folk songs, following The Book of Songs. The most famous literary genres of the Tang Dynasty were poems and ci poems, and the famous poems and ci poems that have come down to us have become the inspirational source and lyrical material for modern composers, who compose art songs. This course is divided into three chapters. The first chapter illustrates the characteristics of Han Yuefu music poetry and Tang Dynasty poetry in the form of vivid animations. The second chapter, through cooperation of teachers and students, focuses on singing and teaching two art songs composed from Han Yuefu music and the Tang Dynasty poems. The third chapter mainly focuses on teaching and singing an art song composed from a Tang Dynasty poem, “Flowers Are Not Flowers”.
