1In 2008, as one of the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage items, Chinese traditional flower arrangement was inscribed by the “Ministry of Culture into the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of China.” Its concept is deeply influenced by Chinese classical aesthetics and Chinese traditional art, especially the art of poetry, calligraphy and painting. The flower arrangement has been clarified and formed by following its spirit, borrowing its laws and combining with its own special characteristics. The art form of Chinese Ikebana and Floral Art is full of rich cultural connotations and humanistic spirit and expresses the thoughts and feelings by using flower arrangement. The form, thus, is one way to express the cultural mentality of China artistically. Traditional Chinese flower arrangement and floral art inherits the spirit of classical Chinese aesthetics and traditional Chinese art of promoting the Natural Law through art and embodies the spirit of Laozi’s aesthetics which emphasizes that art must truly reflect the living world and follow the essence and destiny of the universe and nature. It also embodies the theory in Confucius aesthetics that emphasizes that art should play a positive role in society. This course will lead foreign learners to appreciate the essence of traditional Chinese flower arrangement and floral art, to understand its creative mood and techniques, to experience traditional Chinese culture more concretely, and to be propagators and lovers of Chinese culture.
