As the national treasure, Peking opera embodies the essence of Chinese traditional culture. Same as Western Operas, it stems from life yet goes beyond life. This course begins with explaining how Chinese people understand arts by the origin of Chinese characters. Then, based on historical records, the origin and development of Peking opera will be concluded. In the end, by showing actors’ singing and stage speech on the stage, the course not only shows the Yin Yang philosophy in Peking opera and the beautiful connotation of Peking opera that being joyous but not indecent, mournful but not distressing.
