The World of the Bead String is a course designed to last 50 minutes and taught in Chinese over two class periods. An age-old Chinese traditional art, bead strings come in multiple materials and uses, vivifying the various objects. They serve such uses as mind improvement, health preservation and ornamentation. There is something culturally and aesthetically valuable in the Chinese bead string culture that sustains it to this day. The various bead string ornaments embody an age-old influential culture as well as people’s longing for a happy life. For this course, the instructor spends the first class period explaining the history, developments and types of bead strings to the learners so that their history and design can demonstrate the historical, cultural and aesthetic elements in the art. The second class period relates to hands-on experience and the learners can try making an exquisite Chinese knot (Chinese: 中国结) from the available fishing line and beads.
