This episode introduces the solar terms of Dong Zhi, Xiao Han, and Da Han. “The Earthworm’s Knot”, “The Elk’s Antlers”, “The Water Flows”, “The Goose Journeys Home”, “The Nesting Magpie”, “The Pheasant’s Gathering”, “The Chicken Lays Eggs”, “The Ferousious Searching Birds”and “The Frozen Lakes”are the 9 Wuhou, or natural wonders of late winter. During Dong Zhi, or winter solstice, the nights are long and the days are short. The three Wuhou of Dong Zhi are “The Earthworm’s Knot”, “The Elk’s Antlers”, and “The Water Flows”. This is the start of Dong Zhi the birth of Yang Qi. During this time, earthworms are hibernating in the soil and curled up like little knots, elk’s feel the Yin Qi gradually receding, and spring water in the mountains start to flow. Xiao Han is the fifth solar term of winter and the coldest solar term of the whole year. Xiao Han’s three Wuhou are; “The Goose Journeys Home”, “The Nesting Magpie”, and“The Pheasant’s Gathering” . During Xiao Han, wild geese begin to fly north, magpies begins to build their nests and pheasants begin to crow. The cold is approaching but it’s followed by spring. Da Han is a time of extremely cold weather and is the last solar term within the 24 solar terms. The three Wuhou of Da Han are; “The Chicken Lays Eggs”, “The Ferousious Searching Birds”and “The Frozen Lakes”. During Da Han, hens will lay eggs after a long winter break, hawks can be seen hunting in the air, and a thick, hard ice forms in the middle of the ponds.
