After autumn, winter is ushered in. Similar to Li Chun, Li Xia and Li Qiu, the traditional Chinese solar term for winter also begins with “Li” , Li Dong, which means the beginning of winter. However “Dong” here doesn’t necessarily mean “winter” but actually means “the end", which refers to this cycle of seasons and all things, as collection, coming to an end. Li Dong is the beginning of winter. This episode introduces Li Dong, Xiao Xue and Da Xue, as well as 9 Wuhou, or natural wonders, under each of these three solar terms. Da Xue: “ The Silent Cuckoo”, “The Tigers Begin Mating” and “The Blooming Orchid” We experience the four seasons; spring, summer, autumn, and winter, much like how we experience youth, adolescence, middle-age and old age. However, this is not the summary of life, but what life contains. The quiet of winter is the quiet of life. It is the gathering and waiting of the energy and the reincarnation of the soul. There is movement in the quiet, it’s in every piece of snow floating in the air, in the heart of distant waves, in the life of the surging heat below the surface, ready to return.
