Tao Yuanming once described such a scene in his Back to Country Life: "The distant village dimly looms somewhere, With smoke from chimneys drifting in the air. In silent country lanes a stray dog barks; Amid the mulberry trees cocks crow with larks." Besides this quiet and tranquil country life, everyone has a passion for the pastoral life. Village is the root of Chinese culture. The traditional culture with Confucianism as the mainstay has a deep foundation in rural areas of China, which has historically undertaken the functions of promoting rural education, maintaining ethical customs, continuing local culture and helping social governance. Academy is a unique educational organization and form in ancient China. Academy culture has played an important role in social education in the history of Chinese cultural development. The soul of rural revitalization is cultural revitalization, and modern rural academy is an important link to develop rural culture and improve rural education. This course will outline the significance of rural academy to cultural inheritance, complementary civilizations and rural revitalization from three aspects: the historical origin of academy culture, the functional value of rural academy and the contemporary development of rural academy.
