Printing is one of the four great inventions of ancient China, originating from seals and stamps. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties of ancient China, woodblock printing was the widely used printing technique. During the Northern Song Dynasty of China, Bi Sheng (990–1051) invented movable type printing, a printing technique that largely improved the speed and accuracy of printing. Ever since, the art of printing becomes more and more sophisticated and advanced. The cost of books was reduced, knowledge was widely disseminated, and education was no longer a privilege reserved for the wealthy. This course will provide an overview of the history and evolution of printing. We will also show you how to print on your own using "traditional" methods through demos.
