This lecture focuses on the performing arts in Hangzhou, started with introducing the well-known theaters, art colleges and universities in Hangzhou, highlighting the popular performances and traditional dramas. China's traditional drama combines literature, music, dance, fine arts and other artistic forms, and is the crystalized embodiment of performing arts. Two traditional Chinese performing arts are introduced. Yue Opera is known as "China Opera", with its spirit and local characteristics of Jiangnan, and Butterfly Lovers is, called a Chinese Romeo and Juliet, introduced. Kunqu Opera, known as the "father of a hundred operas", listed as the "work of oral and intangible heritage of mankind" by UNESCO, is featured with ts elegant and poetic lyrics, graceful melody and unique performance. Kunqu Opera's music note, called Gongchepu, with detailed operating information of “依字行腔”, Gongchepu is a great Chinese heritage to the world in terms of music composing.
