1The Tang Dynasty (618-907) was characterized by economic boom, social stability and convenient transportation. This laid a foundation for Tang poets’ traveling around the country and admiring the beautiful rivers and mountains. The meaning of traveling was multidimensional. Ancient poets gave expression to their feelings in poems, conveying their thoughts during traveling while depicting the picturesque landscape. Hangzhou, which was described as a paradise under the heavens in “上有天堂下有苏杭”(There is paradise above and Suzhou and Hangzhou below), and Yangzhou, which was referred to as “leading the country”, were both favorite cities of Tang poets. What legacies did they leave to the two beautiful cities? Why was Hangzhou the best memory of BAI Juyi? Why did DU Mu sigh in his poem that “ten years’ life in Yangzhou is like a dream”?Let's look for the answers to these questions in Tang Poetry& Travel.
