"Xiang embroidery" is an embroidery centered on Changsha with distinctive characteristics of Hunan and Chu cultural. It originated from folk embroidery in Hunan Province and is characterized by the vivid and lifelike image with a strong sense of reality. There are more than 70 kinds of stitches in Hunan embroidery. Among them, the “Mao Mao Stitch” is unique to Hunan embroidery. The embroidered product of lion and tiger by “Mao Mao Stitch” are well-known at home and abroad. Therefore it has the reputation of “Embroidered flowers could emit, Embroidered bird could hear, Embroidered tiger could run, Embroidered people could express”. It has become the “Cultural Card” of Hunan Province and “Artistic Card” of China. Through the teaching method of integrating teaching, learning, and doing, this course focuses on the process and techniques of Hunan embroidery by giving priority to students’ practice with the teacher’s guidance. First of all, it introduces the basic process of Hunan embroidery. Secondly, it gives a comprehensive introduction of the materials and tools of Hunan embroidery, and help students get the operation skills of stretching. Finally, it introduces the most basic operation skills before we start producing the embroidery by teaching thread splitting and hidden stitching. Through the instruction, demonstration, and guidance of the teacher, it enables the students to understand the culture of Hunan embroidery, to gradually learn the operation methods of stretching, drawing, threading and thread splitting, and to get the basic stitches of Hunan embroidery techniques.
