Seals engraving is a very old art and craft in China and plays an important part in the country’s stone culture. Xiling Seals Engraving Society, who gave birth to the art, was placed on the first list of China’s intangible cultural heritages. In 2009, the “art of seals engraving” the Society took the lead in application won a place on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The success reassured the status of the Society as the representative of the seals engraving inheritance and the world’s center of seal studies. Seals engraving are usually applied to stone tablets or petty seals with a red stamp pad. Onto such a tiny space we see a blend of the forceful or refined brushwork and lifelike engraving. This is an art where we can “find a universe from an inch”.
