This course presents the origin of Chinese folk songs, different genres of Chinese folk songs and appreciation to the representatives of regional folk songs in China. The course aims not only to introduce students to Chinese folk songs, but also to explore the nature of Chinese culture through its musical practices. Important works of the minorities, the northwest, and the southeast will be introduced, as well as issues such as values and ideologies embedded in the metaphorical lyrics of folk songs, understanding of Chinese culture, history and customs through music appreciation and practicing. The course will also provide the opportunities for the students to practice singing and performing under the guidance of the teachers and some professionals, which will enable them benefit greatly from learning through practice flexibly.
