The main purpose of studying Longmen Grottoes is to let overseas friends understand the ancient capital culture and grotto culture of Henan. In the history of Luoyang, 13 dynasties established their capitals here, making it the capital city with the earliest, longest duration, and greatest number of dynasties in China. Longmen Grottoes is located in Luoyang City, Henan Province. It is the world’s largest stone carving art treasure house with the most sculptures and the largest scale. It was rated as the "Highest Peak of Chinese Rock Carving Art" by the UNESCO. Beginning around the year 493 AD it developed through the Eastern and Western Wei, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang and Song dynasties and continued large-scale construction for more than 400 years. Densely spread on the cliffs of the east and west mountains of Yishui River, it is 1 km long from north to south and there are more than 97,000 Buddha statues. The largest Buddha statue is 17.14 meters high, and the smallest is only 2 cm. Longmen Grottoes ranks first among all the major grottoes in China and is now a world cultural heritage site.
