1Chinese Paper Cutting is one of the most traditional and popular handicrafts in China. Its history can be traced back to the 1st century BC in Han Dynasty. In Chinese culture, paper cutting symbolizes the ideas of happiness and good luck and reveals people’s pursuit of a better life. This lecture aims to introduce the history of Chinese paper cutting, the respective characteristics of paper cutting schools in the north and south China, as well as symbolic meanings and uses of various patterns. It also contains some tips and techniques of Chinese paper cutting. Students are expected to finish a piece of work after mastering the basic skills.
