1Traditional Architecture is a reflection and expression of regional culture. As Shanghai’s unique traditional architectural style, Shikumen represents not only a form of architecture but the character and spirit of Shanghai urban culture. This lecture seeks to help students gain a better understanding of Shanghai’s Shikumen architecture, including, the origin of its name, its historical background and its main architectural features. Students will also be able to study the characteristics of Shanghai's urban culture through vivid examples. The successful Xin Tian Di project serves as a perfect case study to discuss the preservation and inheritance of traditional houses in the changing city.
