This course focuses on Chinese history. As is known to all, China has a long history with different dynasties. Starting from Xia Dynasty, the history is as long as 4,100 years. The Qin Dynasty, the first centralized Dynasty, was founded about 2241 years ago. During this long period of history, China used to be separated and reunited. China once enjoyed high prosperity in economy, technology but also suffered from being a weak and poor country. It is hard to give detailed information about Chinese history in one or two hours. Therefore, this course will first give a general introduction so that participants can have an overall understanding of Chinese history. Then it will focus on specific topics ranging from Chinese thoughts, institutions, technology to literature, describing how these specific aspects developed in history. All these can help participants to understand how Chinese culture is shaped by history.
