North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) owns a Huayuan campus (No. 36 Beihuan Road, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, covering an area of 555 mu), a Longzihu campus (No. 136 Jinshui East Road, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, covering an area of 1,780 mu) and a Jianghuai campus (No. 236 Longchi Avenue, Luoshan County, Xinyang City, Henan Province, covering an area of 1,500 mu) under construction, which is a university jointly supported by the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China and Henan Province and mainly managed by Henan Province. It is one of the first group of universities in China to confer master's degrees, to build up the basic capacity of universities in mid-western China, to be qualified to enroll overseas students, and to be under the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Programme. It is also the leading university in China of the BRICS Network University determined by the Ministry of Education. The university was founded in 1951 as the Water Conservancy School of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Central People's Government in Beijing. In 1978, it was renamed as North China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower, and it was relocated to Zhengzhou City, Henan Province in 1990. In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Water Resources to Henan Province, where it was jointly established by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Henan Provincial Government. In 2009, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Henan Provincial Government signed a strategic agreement to jointly establish the North China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower. In 2013, it was renamed as North China University of Water Resources and Hydropower. In 2021, it was selected as one of the "double first-class" discipline construction universities in Henan Province.
