Introduction to Tianjin Chengjian University

Tianjin Chengjian University (TCU), founded in 1978, is a regular institute of higher education under the administration of Tianjin Municipal Government. As the fourth branch of Tianjin University, back to over forty years ago, it carried out undergraduate education with the support of Tianjin University. In 1979, it was named Architectural Branch of Tianjin University, and in 1987, was renamed as Tianjin Institute of Urban Construction, and then as Tianjin Chengjian University (TCU) in 2013.

Over the past 44 years, TCU sticks to the principle of “developing urban science and cultivating talents for urban construction”. By drawing on the advantages of related industries, highlighting its features, sticking to quality-oriented development and pursuing excellence, TCU fulfills the motto of “Morality and Capability, Learning and Building”. Dedicated to new urbanization and urban modernization, TCU has developed the features of “focusing on urban construction, adhering closely to related industries, emphasizing the cultivation of morality and capability, and cultivating compound applied talents with both professional proficiency and personal integrity.

TCU is located at No.26, Jinjing Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin.TCU covers an area of 595,400m2, with a building area of 453,200m2, and its greening coverage rate reaches 41%. TCU has been awarded the title of Tianjin Harmonious Campus for many years consecutively. TCU consists of 15 schools, 3 teaching departments (centers) and 1 school of continuing education with more than 18,000 full-time students. TCU now has more than 1,400 staff members, including over 1,000 full-time faculties and over 400 of which have senior professional titles.

TCU attaches great importance to the all-round development of students’ morality, intelligence, sports, aesthetics and labor education. Under student-centered principle, TCU deepens education and teaching reform, and continuously improves the quality of talent training. Graduates of TCU are highly praised and appreciated by all sectors of society. TCU offers 58 undergraduate programs, among which there are 10 national first-rate programs, 14 Tianjin first-rate programs, 3 emerging engineering programs, 1 emerging interdisciplinary programs, 1 national featured program, 1 national and 2 Tianjin comprehensive reform pilot programs, 7 Tianjin branded programs, 5 Tianjin strategic emerging industries related programs, 8 Tianjin programs of advantage and characteristics, 12 Tianjin applied programs, 6 programs having passed the undergraduate professional evaluation(accreditation) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, 32 programs that have implemented the reform of “enrollment in large category + distribution by program”. TCU has been approved of 1 national first-rate course, 33 Tianjin first-rate courses, 12 Tianjin excellent courses, 4 Tianjin municipal branded courses in English for overseas students, 12 national and municipal key textbooks. TCU owns 10 Tianjin experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 Tianjin virtual simulation experiment teaching center, 1 first-batch pilot project of Tianjin virtual teaching and research section, and 1 demonstration base of practical education of Tianjin universities. TCU has 3 first-batch “Emerging Engineering” research and practice projects approved by the Ministry of Education and 1 first-batch “Emerging Liberal Arts” research and reform projects approved by the Ministry of Education. TCU has 14 Tianjin Outstanding Teachers and 15 Teaching Teams of Tianjin, TCU has also won 19 teaching achievement awards. TCU has made remarkable achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship in recent years. TCU has won over 200 municipal and ministerial science and technology awards in 2021, including the “Winner’s Cup” in “Challenge Cup” competition in Tianjin and has been approved of 47 innovation and entrepreneurship training projects, including 16 national ones. In addition, 6 students have won the Tianjin Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Scholarship. In 2021, the employment rate of TCU has ranked third among Tianjin universities.

Scientific and reasonable discipline layout, distinct disciplinary characteristics. TCU has developed 7 disciplinary clusters of urban planning, urban construction, urban management, eco-city, smart city, urban economy and urban culture. Now the university offers 14 first-level master programs and 11 professional master programs, including 1 Tianjin first-rate discipline (Civil Engineering), 1 Tianjin first-rate discipline under construction (Environmental Science and Engineering) and 4 Tianjin featured disciplinary clusters and 4 Tianjin industry-related featured disciplinary clusters, and 6 Tianjin key disciplines.

Scientific research and technology transfer ability continuously improving. TCU owns 26 science and technology platforms at municipal and ministerial level, including 1 National Engineering Research Center, 4 municipal and ministerial key laboratories, 8 municipal and ministerial engineering centers, 1 international joint research center, 1 base of humanities and social sciences, 1 university think tank, 1 municipal and ministerial think tank of scientific and technological innovation, 1 municipal and ministerial base of technology transfer, 2 municipal and ministerial collaborative innovation center, 1 strategic alliance, 4 Tianjin science base, and 1 “Belt and Road” collaborative laboratory. In recent 5 years, TCU has been approved over 70 national scientific research projects and over 350 municipal and ministerial scientific research projects; has won over 70 awards for science and technology at or above municipal and ministerial level; has published nearly 106 academic works and has obtained more than230 invention patents. In 2019, TCU was approved the National Defense Technology Innovation Special Zone Project by the Science and Technology Committee of Central Military Commission for the first time. In 2020, TCU won Tianjin Patent Award for the first time. The average annual research fund is more than 100 million yuan in recent three years.

Capabilities of faculties continue to improve, number of high-level talents significantly increased. The number of advanced talents of TCU continues to increase. Among them, including 2 national engineering talents, 2winners of the New Century Talents Funding Program of the Ministry of  Education, 1 Tianjin Top Young Talent, 1 Tianjin Distinguished Professors, 3 Distinguished Young Scholars, 7 winners in the first-level of Tianjin 131 Talent Project, 4 winners for Five Batches Talents Project for publicity and culture in Tianjin, 1winners for Young and Middle-aged Leading Talent in Scientific and Technological Innovation of Tianjin Talent Cultivation Plan, 3 winners for Outstanding Young Talent in Science and Technology, 2 winners of Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of Tianjin, and 6 innovative teams of Tianjin universities and 1 innovation team in key areas of Tianjin Talent Promotion Plan, 1 innovative team at level B of Tianjin “Project +Team” 1 innovative talent team of Tianjin 131 Talent Project.

Expanding international engagement and cooperation, actively serving the “Belt and Road” construction. TCU has signed MOU with 45 universities and institutions in 20 countries, and has conducted 30 cooperation programs with 17 foreign universities. Among them, the undergraduate education project for engineering management with VIA University College in Denmark has conducted enrollments for 8 years consecutively. “International School Engineering School at Tianjin Chengjian University”, the Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run educational institution approved by the Ministry of Education was established in 2019, offering undergraduate and postgraduate education. In 2021, TCU has passed the qualification evaluation (accreditation) for overseas study in China. The Joint Research Center for Protective Infrastructure Technology and Environmental Green Bioprocess, jointly established with University of Technology Sydney, Australia, has been in the third batch of international scientific and technological cooperation bases in Tianjin. The Sino-Australia Joint Research Centre for High Performance Civil Engineering Materials and Intelligent Construction Technology, jointly established by TCU and Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, has been approved as the “Belt and Road” collaborative laboratory (research center) in Tianjin in 2020. TCU was listed as one of model units in Tianjin for introducing overseas talents.
