长春外国语学校是1963年9月在周总理的指示下创办的全国七所外国语学校之一，是我国东北地区唯一一所教育部备案的外国语学校，是全国外国语学校工作研究会副会长单位,隶属吉林省教育厅,是吉林省首批办好的重点中学。有十位新中国特命驻外全权大使毕业于我校;从1977年恢复高考起，我校在保送多名优秀毕业生的基础上，仍创造了13届全省高考文科状元的佳绩。2001年被教育部确定为全国十三所具有高校保送优秀毕业生资格的外国语学校之一，每年有120名优秀毕业生被保送至全国重点大学深造;2005年被吉林省教育厅评为示范性普通高中，连续多年被评为长春市特色教育工作一等奖和教育教学优秀单位;2018年，“培养学生全球胜任力的研究与实践”获得吉林省教学成果一等奖;2019年被评为吉林省教育系统先进集体，全国示范性外国语学校称号。

CFLS was one of the first seven foreign language schools initiated by the late Premier Zhou Enlai in 1963 in Changchun, Jilin Province, China, aiming to cultivate foreign language speakers, with the mission to cope with the increasing national demand for bilingual workforce in such sectors as foreign affairs, international trade and diplomacy.It is the only foreign language school registered by the Ministry of Education in Northeast China and the first batch of key secondary schools in Jilin Province，where ten ambassadors graduated here.Stipulated by the Ministry of Education, top students from each graduating class in CFLS are exempted from the National Higher Education Entrance Examination and are instead directly admitted into top universities. On the basis of guaranteeing many outstanding graduates to top universities, our school still created the excellent results of the 13 provincial top scorers in National Higher Education Entrance Examination. In 2005, our school was appraised as a Model Secondary school by the Education Department of Jilin Province. For many years, our school was appraised as the first prize of Changchun Characteristic Education and the excellent department of education and teaching. In 2018, "research and practice on cultivating students' global competence" won the first prize of teaching achievement of Jilin province.In 2019, our school was awarded the title of advanced collective of education system of Jilin province and National Model Foreign Language School.

CFLS actively promotes quality education, focusing on cultivating students' abilities and specialties.Its curriculum places a particular emphasis on foreign language training and simultaneously maintains rigorous standards in the arts and sciences. CFLS also played an important part in The Vasa International Youth Education Union, which is dominated by the foreign ministers of China, the United States, Sweden and Japan, with a deep international influence.
