Tianjin Foreign Studies University

Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU), one of China's eight foremost higher education institutions specializing in foreign languages, is a multidisciplinary university with "Foreign Language & Literature" as the predominant discipline.

The history of TFSU can be traced back to 1921 when the university's first predecessor, Hautes Etudes Industrielles et Commerciales was founded at the present site of the Machang Road campus. In 1964, the university's second predecessor — Qinhuangdao Foreign Language College (later renamed Tianjin Foreign Language College) was established.

Then in 1974, with the approval of the State Council, Tianjin Foreign Language College expanded into a new school known as Tianjin Institute of Foreign Languages at the current Machang Road campus. In 2010, with the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the school was renamed Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

Today's TFSU has two campuses—the Machang Road campus and the Binhai campus, covering a total area of approximately 70 hectares. The Machang Road campus lies in the city's iconic Wudadao area and a number of buildings inside it are rated as Historical Heritage Architecture, rendering a cultural uniqueness to the campus. The Binhai campus boasts picturesque scenery and is situated in the ecologically-friendly university complex in Dagang District, Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA).

Following its motto, "For Global Knowledge and Moral Integrity", the university gives priority to quality and integrity, and devotes itself to nurturing well-rounded, high quality, interdisciplinary talents with strong abilities of self-directed learning and intercultural communication. The university makes great efforts to feature "foreign language+" & "major +" education with a focus on producing talents who possess both solid professional knowledge and strong language proficiency.

The university attaches great importance to international academic and cultural exchanges. Each year TFSU admits over 2,000 international students from more than 60 countries around the world for short-term and long-term studies. All TFSU students stand a chance to study abroad, thanks to the "2+2", "3+1", or "4+1" cooperative education programs, joint master's and doctoral programs co-launched with overseas universities, and the Volunteer Chinese Language Teachers Program. In response to the national strategy of "Chinese culture going global", the university has co-hosted nine Confucius Institutes respectively with Soonchunhyang University in South Korea, University of Lisbon in Portugal, Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University in Russia, Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Colombia, Kiev National Linguistic University in Ukraine, and Musashino University in Japan, Omar Bongo University in Gabon, University of Debrecen in Hungary, Federal University of Goiás in Brazil. TFSU was twice honored the "Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner Award".
