There are many legends about the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival, among which the legend commemorating Qu Yuan is the most widespread. Qu Yuan was from the State of Chu in the Warring States Period (475B.C-221B.C.), and served as minister of King Huai of Chu. There were seven states during the Warring States Period, including the State of Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, Wei and Qin. During the War of the seven states, Qu Yuan advocated uniting Qi to fight against Qin. However, King Huai of Chu didn’t follow Qu Yuan’s suggestion and Chu was destroyed. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. There are many customs on the Dragon Boat Festival, for example, eating glutinous rice dumplings, holding a dragon-boat race, hanging wormwood leaves and wearing five-colored thread, etc. The custom of eating glutinous rice dumplings and holding a dragon-boat race is to commemorate Qu Yuan.
