Beijing Opera, one of the Chinese Quintessence, is the most influential opera genre in China and an important expression of excellent traditional Chinese culture. It includes many artistic elements that can be used as symbols of traditional Chinese culture. This course shows Peking Opera’s beauty through two aspects. First, it introduces Peking Opera’s history, symbols, meanings, and underlying cultural logic in detail, which answers theoretically the reason why it is China’s quintessence. Second, it performs how a Peking Opera Dan (female role) puts on makeup, which is beneficial for students to cultivate their perception of beauty and traditional Chinese artistic charm in practice.
