This course, mainly including three components, presents a brief introduction of Chinese calligraphy, including its origin and development, and the inclusiveness and profoundness of Chinese culture. The first part introduces the uniqueness of Chinese calligraphy through the comparison between pens’ history around the world and Chinese invention of writing brush; the second introduces the development of Chinese calligraphy, features of five different styles of script, known as ‘regular’, ‘cursive’, ‘official’, ‘seal’ and ‘running’, and some masters and masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy; the third part stages the performance of Chinese calligraphy, and introduces four treasures of the Study, known as writing brush, ink stick, ink slab, and paper.
